Mites and lice, the major swine ectoparasites, spend all their time on their hosts. The skin surface provides a favourable habitat for these ectoparasites year round, but especially in the winter months when hair is thickest and animals are more likely to be in poor, susceptible condition. Ticks are most active in warm months.
